Am I disturbing the hive?

While I am not looking to open my hive at all, I am keeping a regular eye on things through the observation window(s).  Whilst it obviously lets light in, is too frequent opening and closing of the obs window considered a disturbance to the hive?

If so, how much or little observation through the window would be ok?

Not sure what how often or how long for you mean when you say you keep a ‘regular’ eye on them through the obs window.

When we first got our windowed TBHs, we would observe them once in the morning and once in the evening for about 1-2 mins at a time. This level of obs did not seem to upset them – those colonies thrived. I would suggest that if that is the kind of level you are doing, it should be OK as long as they are not otherwise stressed by something else; although of course individual colonies can differ greatly. But if the guards seem to pay a lot of attention to you, then I’d back off and leave them to themselves.

  2. I am really doing about the same. Looking for a few minutes in the morning and the same again later in the afternoon. Hopefully that is fine

I should add, we don’t observe them through the window much these days – only occasionally to check if they need more bars/room adding. Now we mainly observe them at the hive entrance, and find it is much more revealing about how they are doing overall.
