Mouse Guard

I would be interested to know what type of mouseguard folks use on a Warre hive. I have wooden guards which cover the whole entrance with a very small gap in the bottom but I’m always worried that mice would chew this away and wondered if there was a specific metal guard for the Warre.  Also when do you apply your mouse guard?

Thanks.

One Response to Mouse Guard

In ‘Beekeeping For All’, Warré shows at page 55 a combined mouse-guard and wasp guard. I use a flat strip of metal cut from a used bean tin which I pin in place across the entrance to leave a full length, 7.5mm high gap. For occasional circular entrances in boxes above the floor I use metal plate drilled with 10mm holes. I put guards in place by 1st of October when early frosts cause mice to seek warm nests places.
